What are your habits telling your bladder?

When it comes to your pelvic floor function, our bladder is an important part! Whether we experience symptoms like leakage, urgency, frequency or not, it is worth considering if our habits and patterns are healthy and supportive.

Even as children, there are behaviors we can adopt that instill less than ideal patterns for our bladders. For example, if your family would take vacations that required you to be in the car for long periods of time, there is good chance your parents encouraged you to go before you left, even if you didn't feel the urge. The idea that you should, "go pee just in-case," can actually train your bladder to create a sense urgency before you leave the house versus it sending the correct signals at a time it is truly full.

Allowing the act of leaving the house to trigger the action of going to try and urinate take precedence over a proper signal from your bladder can cause urgency over time. When we give our bladders a chance to fill up before we empty, we create more space and time between bathroom breaks and become more in-tune with what our body's functions are.

If you do find yourself having the urge to urinate while you are on-the-go and not close to a bathroom, doing some slow, prolonged Kegel exercises by simply engaging your pelvic floor will send a signal to your bladder that it isn't time to release yet and calm those feelings of urgency.
